Sometimes the world can be overwhelming. The constant flow of stimuli, sounds and emotions can become too much, especially for highly sensitive individuals and children. They more easily sense the emotions and stress of others and are more easily affected by them. At these times, it is important to have a safe place to retreat to, an oasis of calm amid the chaos.
In our “Safe Place”, we can take a breath, unwind and organise our thoughts. We can let our emotions flow here, without fear of judgement or criticism. It is a place where we can be ourselves, where we can recover from the chaos of the world around us.
For highly sensitive individuals and children, a “Safe Place” is often invaluable. It allows them to regulate stimuli, process emotions and protect themselves from overstimulation. It gives them the space to recover and regain balance, allowing them to fully participate again in the world around them.
Creating a “Safe Place” is simple. It can be as simple as setting up a quiet corner in our home with pillows, blankets and soft lighting, or visualising an imaginary place in our minds. Most importantly, it should be a place that soothes us and comforts us when we need it.
