Confidence in the world and the people around you only takes hold when you can have confidence in yourself. Trust is not a fixed fact; rather, it is a kind of ’state’ that can be learned, practised and mastered like any other skill. In the process, you also learn to have a razor-sharp sense of who has your best interests at heart, and whose motives are not quite in line with yours.
Although almost all of us are born with exceptional potential to develop ourselves, we don't always do so. We allow ourselves to be influenced by the opinions of others and prefer to stay in our comfort zone. We are told (usually well-meaning) that that one dream is not for us, that ‘it’ is not within our talents, that we should be content with the life we have now.
(Self-)confidence is the inner strength that takes us beyond that point. It makes us believe in ourselves and our goals, allowing us to become who we want to be.
“Don't compare yourself to others. Keep your head up and remember: you are no better or worse, you are just yourself, and no one is better at being you than you are.”
